That is not an accident. It is the smallest group that can hold a full harmonic conversation, and the one that travels best on a boat.

Piano

We use a weighted stage piano rather than an acoustic instrument, for the obvious reason that humidity on the lake would ruin a real one within a season. The pianist carries the melody and the harmony at once, which means the band can play a huge repertoire without a horn.

Upright bass

The bass is the heartbeat of the group. On the water the low end carries beautifully across the deck, and a good bassist can keep an entire boat gently moving in time without anyone noticing why. Our players use a small pickup so the sound stays warm even against engine noise.

Drums

A riverboat drummer works with brushes more than sticks. The goal is texture, not volume: a swish of snare under a ballad, a light ride cymbal on the uptempo numbers. When a guest asks why the drums sound so soft, the answer is that the drummer is listening to the water as much as to the band.

When we add a horn

On weekend sunset cruises a saxophone or trumpet joins the trio. The horn takes the melody and the sets lean further toward the classic songbook. If you want to hear a tenor solo echo off the river walls, Saturday is your night.

Why our core band is piano, bass and drums, and how each player adapts to a stage that moves.

[2

post-13","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-onboard-jazz
["GET
